On February 8, Nature Nanaimo members went to Little Qualicum Falls for an outing. It was a lovely outing as the river was in full spate with the constant accompaniment of massive roaring torrents. The various mosses were at their best with many varieties and a palette of shades of greens. There are all sorts of ferns, and moss encrusted trees, adding to the very authentic “ Wet Coast” atmosphere. There are multiple viewing points. We went first to the Upper Falls and then to the Lower Falls. It is easily manageable, even for those of us who took the steps fairly gently. A hiking pole was definitely an asset as a guard against uneven ground and gnarled tree roots. I have actually never seen so many warning signs to be careful, and to not climb the fences or swim. Presumably some misguided visitors have tried? After leaving Little Qualicum Falls, we drove to Qualicum Beach following Doug’s advice, and had a lovely and reasonably priced lunch at the very characterful Shady Rest restaurant. It is right on the beach, with a stunning view of the Mainland mountains across the straits. There were many sea birds and shore birds to be seen, as well as passing Sea Lions and several seals who decided to put on their best diving and flipper splashing entertainment right outside the window!”
