Enhancing Estuary Resilience: Restoring the Snuneymuxw (Nanaimo) River Estuary: March 21, 2024

Curtis and Sonja work together on implementing the Estuary Resilience monitoring study at 17 estuaries throughout coastal BC, primarily collecting data and implementing restoration projects alongside our First Nation project partners. Their presentation will provide an overview of the NTBC’s study “Enhancing Estuary Resilience: An Innovative Approach to Sustaining Fish and Fish Habitat in a Changing Climate” with a focus on multiple restoration projects completed at the Snuneymuxw River estuary.

Curtis was born and raised in Nanaimo where he completed a Technical Diploma in Forest Resource Technology and an undergraduate degree in Geography at Vancouver Island University. He has been working for the Nature Trust of BC (NTBC) since 2018, and in his current role as a Senior Restoration and Monitoring Technician since 2019. Curtis is a Registered Biology Technologist (RBTech) in good standing with the BC College of Applied Biologists.

Sonja completed a BSc in Geography and Biology at the University of Victoria and has since worked in the field on research projects up and down the coast of BC, learning about seabirds, salmon, and now estuary ecosystems. Sonja is also a Senior Restoration and Monitoring Technician, and has been working for the NTBC since 2019. Sonja is also a Registered Biology Technologist (RBTech) in good standing with the BC College of Applied Biologists.
