February 20th @ 7 PM – Beban Social Centre, Room 2:
Over the past decade or two, it has become clear that insect pollinator populations are declining along with other insects. Large scale agriculture focusing on monoculture crops is to blame in part, but we can all share the responsibility as our demands for flawless produce at low cost is ultimately what drives the trend toward industrial crop production. We cannot directly affect this, but we can ensure that our immediate surroundings are pollinator friendly. In this presentation Staffan will discuss pollinators, mainly illustrated by experiences from my own backyard.
Staffan Lindgren is an entomologist with particular interests in chemical ecology, plant-insect interactions, and forest insect ecology and management. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Northern British Columbia, and a former President of Nature Nanaimo.
