The proximity of beauty and nature experiences around Nanaimo is a national treasure. So many remarkable places to explore, choosing just one is nearly impossible. Let us start close to home. Maffeo Sutton Park is conveniently located near downtown. It features an engaging walk along the ocean that provides opportunities to observe marine life within a vibrant urban setting. Continuing under the bridge the Millstone River leads to Barsby Park, a hidden gem. This serene location transforms into a bustling area during fall when coho salmon navigate the fish ladder.
A visit to Neck Point might show you a glimpse of passing orcas or turquoise blue water reflecting the herring spawn while Pipers Lagoon is a peaceful escape where seabirds glide across the water. Cable Bay Trail winds down to the oceanfront to overlook Dodds Narrows across a tidal passage. Jack Point is a 32-acre undeveloped park with trails.
Let us now talk about the spectacular marshlands. These urban sanctuaries are teeming with the sounds of Redwing blackbirds, Great Blue Herons, and Hooded Mergansers. Richard’s Marsh Park boasts a boardwalk across the marsh. Want to witness turtle hatchlings? Check out Buttertubs Marsh in early spring. Nature Nanaimo is sponsoring guided tours of the marsh from June through August. Hemer Park will take you through wooded trails to a picturesque lakeside and marsh. Brookwood Park is bordered by marshes and includes an enclosed children’s area with wheelchair accessibility.
Our region contains forested areas such as Morrell Sanctuary, Westwood Lake Park. Linley Valley, Mt Benson, Bowen, Ammonite Falls and Lotus Pinnatus Park. Beyond the marshlands and forests, Nanaimo’s lakes provide yet another haven for exploration. These predominantly man-made lakes attract plenty of wildlife. They include Diver, Long, Brannen, Colliery, Green, and Westwood.
