March 20, 2025 at 7:00 pm Why It’s Tough Being a Toad on Vancouver Island

The nine native amphibian species on Vancouver Island live in a variety of habitats, and vary in their life history and sensitivity to human disturbance. Ms. Wind will discuss the ecology of our local amphibian populations with an emphasis on the Western Toad, a species at risk that she has been studying for almost 15 years.

Elke Wind obtained her M.Sc. in Conservation Biology at UBC in 1996 and her status as a Registered Professional Biologist in 2003. She has been a self-employed contract biologist since 2002 specializing in the conservation of amphibian populations. She specializes in the habitat associations and requirements of amphibians in relation to impacts of timber harvesting, rural and urban development, linear infrastructure projects (e.g., roads, trails, pipeline right of ways), and non-native species.
