On an overcast but mostly rain-free day 12 nature enthusiasts, including our May 15 speaker Mike Dedels, Executive Director of the Grasslands Conservation Council of BC, Paul Chapman, Executive Director of NALT, visited Harewood Plains, expecting the usual colourful display of flowers that we normally see this time of year. In spite of what I would deem a relatively dry and cool spring, which should have delayed flowering, what greeted us was a largely spent meadow. In moist areas, we found the normal complement of Camas, Monkey Flower, Seablush and Spring Gold.
We also found several patches of Hosackia pinnata growing in seep areas and they appeared to be developing normally albeit not in the abundance we witnessed in June last year. Nevertheless, Mike Dedels discussed the differences between interior and coastal grasslands, and Paul provided information on the ownership and legal status of the land we visited.
